THE "BABY" BARREL

Been hunching over a desk? Driving a lot? Possibly lifting and carrying heavy things (or small children)?

Has all this, plus a dollop of daily-life stress, left your shoulders and back painfully tight? Then this workshop is for you. Joseph Pilates designed the small barrels (sometimes called "baby barrels") specifically for undoing all of the kinds of kinks that the spine accumulates in our modern, sedentary lifestyle.

His classical exercises for the upper body on the small barrel can assist us in opening the chest and correctly placing the shoulders. In the process, deep, full breathing can be rediscovered and tension and discomfort can be greatly relieved.

When we move to the lower body repertoire on the small barrel, we will explore how its support can help us to lengthen the iliopsoas, thus restoring our natural lumbar curvature and helping us to find proper neutral pelvic placement--all of which adds up to relief from back pain and more effective function in our hips and powerhouse.

We will begin with a rousing mat workout to warm up. Barrel work will follow, and the final portion of the workshop will be somewhat tailored to participants' needs and will include stretching and release work, with attention paid to placement and alignment.

This workshop requires some Pilates experience and is not appropriate for anyone with current or recent acute back injuries. If you are in the latter category and are wishing you could participate Morgan would be happy to work with you in a one-on-one setting.
